This wine was made with red grapes that were treated as if making a delicate white wine. After whole cluster pressing without crushing or destemming, there was no skin contact time for the juice. The juice was cold settled at 40F for 2 days, then inoculated with M83 yeast isolated from the famed Bandol Rosé wine region of France. Fermentation took place in one small stainless steel tank at 50-58F for 45 days before completion. The long, cool fermentation with a Rosé specific yeast contributed to the freshness and aromatics of this spectacular wine.

Winemaking    This wine was made with red grapes that were treated as if making a delicate white wine.  After whole cluster pressing without crushing or destemming, there was almost no skin contact time for the juice.  The juice was cold settled at 40F for 2 days, then inoculated with M83 yeast, as strain isolated from the famed Bandol Rosé wine region of France.  Fermentation took place in one small stainless steel tank at 50-58F for 45 days before completion.  The long, cool fermentation with a Rosé specific yeast contributed to the freshness and aromatics of this spectacular wine.

The Vintage    The 2014 growing season began with early budbreak and was moderately warm all summer.  The continued drought also led to an earlier than normal harvest, and there was plenty of time to pick at the optimum time.  Most fruit was picked by the end of September, and quality was excellent, with ripe and round flavors and medium yields.

Vineyard    Peaceland Vineyards is located on the Mayacamas Mountains between Santa Rosa and Calistoga.  The estate is nearly 200 acres, most of which remain wooded and wild and beautiful, with 29 acres of the best slopes planted to grapes.  The Rhone grape varietals that go into producing this outstanding Rosé thrive in the less extreme lower sections of this mountain estate vineyard.  These rocky, volcanic derived soils produce grapes of distinction and complexity.

The Vintage:    2015 was the smallest crop ever for Peaceland Vineyard, due to 4 years of drought and an unseasonably cold spring during flowering.  A warm summer ripened the small yield quickly and harvest was early on August 24.

2014 Zinfandel

Proprietor:      RJ Friedland                Winemaker:      Randall Watkins
Vineyard:    Peaceland Vineyards is located on the Mayacamas Mountains between Santa Rosa and Calistoga.  The estate is nearly 200 acres, most of which remain wooded and wild and beautiful, with 29 acres of the best slopes planted to grapes.  Our Zinfandel vines are planted in the ancient head trained method, without any trellising or training wires.  These majestic vines grow vertically much higher than other head trained vineyards, causing the many arms that radiate outward to have many small clusters of highly concentrated fruit.

The Clones:     The oldest Zinfandel vines at Peaceland Vineyard are the Costamagna clone, a California heritage clone originally planted at the Costamagna family ranch in 1931.  The younger Zinfandel vines are also clones sourced from famed historic California vineyards (St Peter’s Church and DuPratt.)  St Peter’s Church Vineyard is over 120 years old, and is the oldest vineyard on a church property in the entire United States.  The DuPratt Vineyard sits at 1400 ft elevation above Anderson Valley, was planted in 1920 and is one of the greatest old vine vineyards of Mendocino.

The Vintage:    2014 was the earliest harvest since Peacelands was planted in 1999.  Due to the drought and warm winter, bud break occurred in February instead of March, flowering was in May instead of June, veraison was in July instead of August and harvest was in September instead of October.  We love early harvests because we are able to pick exactly when we want without worrying about the rainy season coming!

Winemaking:    In order to pick at ideal ripeness, two passes are made when harvesting Peaceland Zinfandel.  As a result, acidity is higher than usual for the varietal, along with much less raisining.  Fermentation was in 2 Tbins in which the cap was punched down by hand twice daily.  1 Tbin was fermented in the sun at a warmer temperature, and 1 Tbin was fermented in the cold room.  The wine was then aged for 18 months in 20% new Ermitage French oak, 80% used Burgundy barrels.

The Wine:    Peaceland’s hillside vineyard produces an exceptionally vibrant and juicy mountain Zinfandel.  Perfectly ripe boysenberry and raspberry fruit lifted by allspice and pepper.  Very aromatic and fresh, inviting and impossible to resist. PURCHASE HERE

2013 Zinfandel

Tasting Notes:   Peaceland’s hillside vineyard produces an exceptionally vibrant and juicy mountain Zinfandel.  Perfectly ripe boysenberry and raspberry fruit lifted by allspice and pepper.  Very aromatic and fresh, inviting and impossible to resist.

Technical     Varietal:        98% Zinfandel/2% Petite Sirah
Notes           Alcohol: 15.0%, pH: 3.47, TA: 6.0 g/l, RS: 0.1%, Harvest Date: 9/28/13 and 10/10/13, Release Date: 8/01/15, Production: 230 cases, Retail: $35.00

Winemaking    In order to pick at ideal ripeness, two passes are made when harvesting Peaceland Zinfandel.  As a result, acidity is higher than usual for the varietal, along with much less raisining.  Fermentation was in 2 small open-topped stainless tanks in which the cap was punched down by hand twice daily.  1 tank was cold-soaked for 7 days prior to fermentation, the other tank started fermentation without prior cold soak.  The wine was then aged for 18 months in 20% new Remond and Saury French oak, 10% new Radoux American oak, 70% used Burgundy barrels.

The Clones     The oldest Zinfandel vines at Peaceland Vineyards are the Costamagna clone, a California heritage clone originally planted at the Costamagna family ranch in 1931.

The Vintage    2013 was the driest and one of the greatest vintages in the last 20 years.  Following a warm and dry spring with even flowering and set, summer offered warm days and near ideal conditions for bringing grapes to uniform maturity.  Across the board, our fruit showed great balance and flavor development, excellent color and tannin structure.  What an epic vintage to launch a new winery!

2013 Syrah

Tasting Notes:    Inky ruby.  Intensely perfumed bouquet of dark berry preserves, bay spice, black tea, creosote and toffee.  Powerfully built, dense, and very fresh, with an exotic mix of mocha-laced dark and dried berry flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins that give the flavors depth and traction.

Technical Notes: Varietal:  100% Syrah
Notes           Alcohol: 14.5%, pH: 3.63, TA: 6.0 g/l, RS: 0.04%, Harvest Date: 10/11/13, Release Date: 8/01/15, Production: 140 cases, Retail: $45.00

Winemaking:    The best Syrah ever made from this vineyard was accidentally produced by doing a 30% saignée in order to make a Rosé.  To replicate this, we did a 30% saignée for concentration and texture, then cold soaked the Syrah for 5 days at 50F before beginning the fermentation.  Fermentation was conducted with the GRE strain of yeast, a selection isolated from the Cornas area of the Rhône Valley.  The wine was aged for 17 months in Ermitage and Saury Burgundy barrels, 33% new.

The Clones:     Syrah is the ancient noble variety which comprises the great Rhône wines of Hermitage, Côte Rôtie, and Cornas, and is used as a blending grape in Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Côtes du Rhône.  Peaceland is planted to 3 of the best French clones: 877, 470, and 174.

The Vintage:    2013 was the driest and one of the greatest vintages in the last 20 years.  Following a warm and dry spring with even flowering and set, summer offered warm days and near ideal conditions for bringing grapes to uniform maturity.  Across the board, our fruit showed great balance and flavor development, excellent color and tannin structure.  What an epic vintage to launch a new winery!

Vineyard:    Peaceland Vineyards is located on the Mayacamas Mountains between Santa Rosa and Calistoga.  The estate is nearly 200 acres, most of which remain wooded and wild and beautiful, with 29 acres of the best slopes planted to grapes.  The Merlot and other Bordeaux varietals are planted on the steeper south-facing blocks.

The Clones:     Clone 181 Merlot traces its origins to Pomerol, and is considered one of the best in Bordeaux.

Winemaking:    The Merlot grapes were destemmed but not crushed and gravity poured into a Tbin fermenter.  The whole berries were so perfectly intact that we decided to foot tread the 4 corners in order to get gently get some juice flowing. Peaceland Chardonnay 2015

The Chardonnay and Syrah are planted on the lower mountain, the coolest section of the vineyard.

The Clones:     Chardonnay was created by crosspollination of the noble grape Pinot Noir and a now nearly extinct grape called Gouais blanc in the Middle Ages.  We planted the Wente clone of Chardonnay, known for having lower yields and more flavor than other Chardonnay clones.  This is due to an unusual amount of hens (normal size berries with seeds) and chicks (tiny seedless berries that are able to ripen normally and pack a lot of flavor for their size.)

The Vintage:    2015 was the smallest crop ever for Peaceland Vineyard, due to 4 years of drought and an unseasonably cold spring during flowering.  A warm summer ripened the small yield quickly and harvest was early on August 24.

Winemaking:    The grapes were brought in cold early in the morning and whole cluster pressed.  No SO2 was added, and juice was cold settled for 48 hours before racking to barrel.  Native yeast fermented in 3 once filled Francois Freres and 1 neutral Ermitage.  100% malolactic in barrel, aged sur lies for 9 months before bottling.

The Wine:    A rich yet delicate style with aromas of Meyer lemon and white peach.  The palate is precise and focused, showing amazing vibrancy and purity, with flavors of green apple and flinty minerality.  PURCHASE HERE

2013 Petite Sirah

The Wine    Saturated purple.  Smoky blackcurrant, cocoa powder, olive, lifted by licorice and violet notes.  A captivating wine that is both powerful and lithe, the deep tannins wrapped abundantly in sweet ripe fruit.

Technical     Varietal:        80% Petite Sirah/20% Syrah
Notes           Alcohol: 14.9%, pH: 3.62, TA: 5.9 g/l, RS: 0.06%, Harvest Date: 10/11/13, Release Date: 8/01/15, Production: 100 cases, Retail: $45.00

Winemaking    Petite Sirah has long been used as a blending grape due to its deep color and intense tannin.  We did a 60 saignée on the Syrah tank in order to concentrate the Syrah, and then put that 60 gallons of juice without skins into the Petite Sirah tank.  Throughout a cool fermentation, only one pump-over with a gentle irrigation was performed each day to avoid over-extraction.  The wine was aged in 20% new French oak, 10% new American oak, and 70% older Burgundy barrels.

The Clones  Petite Sirah (AKA Durif) is the offspring of a cross-pollination between Peloursin and Syrah which means it received half of its genes from each of those varieties. Peloursin is a very old French variety from the Isere region of France, on the east side of the Rhône River. Syrah is the ancient noble variety from which the great Northern Rhône wines of Côte Rôtie and Hermitage are made.
